In an unfortunate incident, a young couple drowned during high tide at the Bandra Bandstand on Wednesday at around 12 pm. The spot is popular among youngsters and is frequently visited by couples. The deceased have been identified as Priti Gupta (20 yrs) and Ram (25 yrs). They were both declared dead by the KB Bhabha hospital doctors late that evening.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, they received a call about the incident at around 12:10 pm and the team reached the spot by 12:23 pm.
As per eyewitnesses, the couple went to sit on a rock some 150 metres away from the seashore and due to the sudden rise in the level of seawater, they got swept away. The alert fishermen managed to rescue the girl, who was taken to the nearby Bhabha hospital but was later declared dead by the doctors.
Since the boy was still missing, Indian Navy divers and coast guards were roped in to undertake the search and rescue operations, along with the fire brigade and local fishermen. After almost five hours of rigorous search operations, the divers found the missing boy in the evening. However, he was declared dead on arrival by the doctors, said the fire brigade officials.
Since the Bandra Bandstand seashore is rocky, the task of undertaking the rescue operation was difficult for the team as diving into the sea would endanger their lives.
The Bandra police station has filed an accidental death report (ADR) case on the mishap that took place.
