45 truckloads of debris removed: HYDRAA ends decades of flooding misery in Ameerpet

Hyderabad: For decades, Ameerpet has been synonymous with rain-induced chaos, waist-deep water, traffic jams, and stranded commuters after even moderate rainfall.

But this monsoon brought a welcome change. The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) effectively ended years of flooding misery in the locality through a focused desilting and drainage restoration drive.

End to Ameerpet’s Annual Flood Woes

Every year, heavy inflows from Jubilee Hills, Gayathri Hills, Yousufguda, Krishnanagar, Madhuranagar, and Srinivasnagar would converge at Ameerpet, overwhelming the drainage system and turning the main road into a waterway.

This time, however, despite 10 cm of rainfall, the water drained smoothly, a result of proactive measures taken by HYDRAA under the supervision of Commissioner AV Ranganath. The initiative ensured the free flow of rainwater and eliminated stagnant pools that had plagued residents and motorists for years.

Commissioner leads on-ground monitoring

Commissioner Ranganath personally supervised the flood-mitigation works in coordination with officials from the GHMC, HMWSSB, and Irrigation Department. Multiple on-site inspections and inter-departmental reviews helped identify choke points in the drainage network.

The Commissioner visited Maitrivanam Junction and Gayathri Nagar to assess the ongoing desilting of stormwater drains. He reviewed progress on six major pipelines in the area, three of which have already been fully restored.

Officials informed him that the remaining three lines are being cleared to prevent backflow from Gayathri Nagar during future monsoons.

45 truckloads of debris removed

One of the major bottlenecks lies beneath the Ameerpet Junction, where drainage lines from Sarathi Studios and Madhuranagar meet. Over several decades, large quantities of silt, garbage, and debris had accumulated, blocking the system and severely restricting water flow.

HYDRAA teams dismantled the concrete covers over the Srinivasnagar West stormwater drain and manually removed accumulated waste ranging from mud to household refuse. So far, 45 truckloads of silt and debris have been cleared from the site.

Officials reported that, following these efforts, the locality did not experience any flooding even after a 10-centimetre rainfall. They further assured that once the remaining three pipelines are fully desilted, Ameerpet will remain waterlogging-free even under 15 cm of rainfall.

Model for Citywide Flood Prevention

Commissioner Ranganath described Ameerpet as a model case for addressing urban flooding across Hyderabad. “If we adopt similar drain-clearing measures in other vulnerable zones, we can drastically reduce waterlogging across the city,” he said.

He directed all field teams to conduct systematic desilting of culverts and underground pipelines in other flood-prone areas before the next monsoon.

Local residents and colony association members expressed their gratitude to HYDRAA for resolving a long-standing civic problem through sustained, on-ground action.
