Hyderabad: The Telangana State government on Monday informed the Legislative Council that it is planning a wide-ranging infrastructure push across Hyderabad, including elevated corridors, flyovers, underpasses and road-widening works, with a target to complete the projects by March 2028.
Aim to reduce traffic congestion
Replying to a starred question raised by MLCs Mahesh Kumar Goud Bomma and Addanki Dayakar during the ongoing session, the Metropolitan Area and Urban Development (GHMC-2) Department confirmed that the proposals are part of a comprehensive plan to address rising traffic congestion in the city.
“Yes,” the government said in its reply, adding that detailed project locations have been placed before the House as an annexure. The response, approved by the Chief Minister, set March 2028 as the completion deadline.
What is the proposal about?
According to the annexure, the proposed works are based on a comprehensive traffic study and an assessment of current traffic loads and congestion levels in Hyderabad.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has drawn up an infrastructure development plan focusing on arterial route improvements through elevated corridors, grade separators, flyovers, underpasses and road expansion.
The government has already accorded administrative sanction for several works under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) project through orders issued in December 2024.
Areas listed for infrastructure development
The plan includes construction of flyovers and underpasses at key traffic choke points such as Jubilee Hills Check Post, Film Nagar, Road No. 45 and NFCL Junction, as well as multi-level flyovers at Khajaguda, IIIT, Wipro Junction, Rethibowli and Nanal Nagar.
Major corridor-level interventions include a six-lane bi-directional flyover from Miyapur to Alwyn Cross Road, underpasses connecting Lingampally to Gachibowli, and grade separators across critical junctions such as Mailardevpally, Shamshabad Road and Kattedan.
In addition, road-widening projects have been proposed across several stretches, including corridors linking NH-65 to Ameenpur, Shastripuram to Engine Bowli and multiple internal roads in the Old City and Jubilee Hills areas.
Rail overbridges (ROBs) and rail underbridges (RUBs) are also part of the plan, with projects proposed at Serilingampally, RK Puram, Patigadda, Chilkalaguda and Aramgarh.
The estimated cost is in thousands of crores
A key highlight of the plan is the construction of three major elevated corridors:
- From Paradise Junction to Dairy Farm Road on NH-44
- From Paradise to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) near Shamirpet
- From Banjara Hills Road No. 12 to Shilpa Layout.
The estimated cost of these elevated corridors runs into several thousand crores, with the Paradise–Shamirpet stretch alone pegged at over Rs 4,200 crore.
The government said the projects are aimed at easing congestion, improving connectivity and strengthening Hyderabad’s urban transport infrastructure in line with growing traffic demands.
