New Delhi: In what seems to be a suicide case, an 18-year-old student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, died after falling from the fifth floor of the IIT hostel building on the campus, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on November 8 and the family is not suspecting foul-play, although they stated that the girl was “under stress” due to her studies.

According to police, preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim Ananya Gupta’s mother met her in the IIT campus on Friday and was with her till afternoon. Later in the evening, the girl was seen going towards the roof of the building using a ladder.

A little while later, the security guard posted near the lecture hall complex heard a sound and upon reaching the spot, found the girl slumped on the ground with severe injuries, police said. She was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where she succumbed on Tuesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Devender Arya said that they had received a call from AIIMS Trauma Centre on November 8 about an IIT student being admitted with serious injuries.

“According to the mother, whose statement has been recorded, she went to the campus after her daughter had called her. They were together till afternoon. In the evening, the security guard who was the first to the victim after her fall alerted the institute staff. Inquest proceedings have been initiated to establish the cause of death,” said Arya.

CCTV footage shows Ananya walking alone towards the ramp of the fifth floor of the hostel.

No suicide note has been recovered from the spot and the police are investigating the case for further details.
