IIT graduate threatens to kidnap, kill businessmans daughter, arrested

Nellore: Nellore police arrested an IIT graduate for trying to extort an industrialist by threatening to abduct and kill his daughter. The accused has been identified as 27-year-old Yellamraju Sai Nikhil Varma from Lingasamudram village under Sydapuram mandal.

City DSP J. Srinivasulu Reddy, on 28 February, said that Nikhil was an intelligent student who went to Navodaya and completed his engineering in mining from IIT-Dhanbad in 2015. He had stolen three mobile phones from an auto-driver and other persons. He used to call the industrialist from these stolen phones and demand money. He would discard the phones to divert the attention of the police, the DSP said.

Finally, investigators were able to track down Nikhil from CCTV camera footage based on his mobile phone signals. "One day the industrialist received a call from the accused. The call was from Nellore railway station and the mobile phone belonged to a passenger who was ready to board a train. When the police contacted the passenger he said one man had made a call from his phone. He identified the man from CCTV footage," Mr Srinivasulu Reddy said.

The police arrested Nikhil on Friday.
