ISIS conspiracy: Nine, including 3 from Hyderabad convicted

Hyderabad: Nine persons, arrested by the National Investigation Agency(NIA) including three from Hyderabad in 2016, were convicted by the Special Court for NIA cases at Patiala House Courts Complex in New Delhi on Saturday, in connection with a ISIS conspiracy case.

In August 2020, six persons were convicted in the same case. In January 2016, the NIA arrested 19 people from different parts of the country, as part of the nationwide crackdown on the ISIS terror module and those working for the organisation in different parts of the country and engaged in recruiting Muslim youth for ISIS, through different social media platforms. The quantum of the punishment would be pronounced on September 22.

This case was the first of its kind in which these ISIS terrorists had conspired to carry out terrorist acts in various parts of the country. The evidence on record proved with regard to their conspiracy meetings in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune and Lucknow.

The trio from Hyderabad who were convicted in the case include Abu Anas, a techie from Rajasthan, and working for an MNC at Hitech City, Mohammed Nafees Khan alias Fatima Khan alias Abu Zarrar of Tolichowki and Mohammed Obedullah Khan of the Old city. Another accused, Mohammed Shareef Moinuddin Khan, an electrical contractor from Tolichowki, who was also arrested at the same time, is currently facing trial.

According to the NIA officials, the case was registered in December 2015 and it pertains to a larger criminal conspiracy hatched by the ISIS to establish its base in India by recruiting Muslim youth through different social media platforms.

During the course of investigation, searches were conducted in various cities and 19 accused were arrested. It was revealed that the accused had formed an organisation by name Junood-ul-Khilafa-Fil-Hind (a group seeking to establish Caliphate in India and pledging allegiance to ISIS/ISIL) to recruit Muslim youth to work for ISIS and commit acts of terrorism in India at the behest of one Yusuf-Al-Hindi alias Shafi Armar alias Anjan Bhai, who is based in Syria and is purportedly the media chief of ISIS.

After completion of investigation, the NIA had filed charge-sheets against 17 accused persons, during 2016 and 2017. Najmul Huda, Mohammed Afzal, Suhail Ahmed, Mohammad Aleem, Mufti Abdus Sami Qasmi and Amzad Khan are among the other convicts
