Visakhapatnam: A joy trip turned tragic for a group of MBBS students of Andhra Medical College (AMC), when one of them died in a road accident near Maruthi Circle, Malkapuram in Visakhapatnam in on Friday. The incident took place when a speeding lorry ran over 20-year-old M Srividya at Malkapuram around 2.30 am on Friday.

Srividya, a third-year MBBS student, was a native of Srikakulam and a resident of Vizag. Her father, M Ravi Kumar, is working as an Assistant Manager with Andhra Bank, Pendurthi in Vizag.

The police said that a group of nine friends, all third-year MBBS students, were travelling to Lammasingi under Chintapalli Mandal in Vizag Agency, to experience the cold weather and dense fog during the morning hours. Since the last week, the temperature has been around 10 degree Celsius with thick fog at Lammasingi.

As per their plan, the group started their journey from Maharanipeta in Vizag on five bikes on Thursday night to reach Lammasingi around 5.30 am on Friday. Srividya was riding alongside her classmate L Santhosh Kumar.

Kumar lost control over the bike, and he applied brakes to control the vehicle. The sudden braking threw Srividya, who was pillion riding, off the bike and she fell on the road near Maruthi Circle. A speeding lorry, which was behind them, ran over her, killing her on the spot. Meanwhile, Kumar, escaped without any injuries as he was able to get his bike under control.

Based on the information, Malkapuram police led by Sub-Inspector Suresh reached the spot. The police shifted the body to King George Hospital in Vizag for post mortem.

Suresh informed that they had registered a case under Section 304 (A) of IPC (causing death by negligence) and the investigation is going on. The incident shocked the students and faculty members of Andhra Medical College.
