Lockdown: Worried Hyderabadi trader attempts suicide infront of Pragati Bhavan

A footwear shop owner allegedly attempted suicide by trying to set himself ablaze outside Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s residence at Pragati Bhavan in Begumpet, Hyderabad on Sunday noon. However, the security staff thwarted his attempt and rescued him.

The owner of the shop, Nazeeruddin, took the extreme step, reportedly due to the financial crisis following Covid-induced lockdown. He was later shifted to Panjagutta police station for further inquiry.

According to sources, Nazeeruddin belongs to Chanchalguda and owns a small footwear store in the Old City, which is his only source of livelihood. Since the lockdown came into force, the shop remained closed. As a result, the family was pushed into financial crisis.

As the lockdown extended and with no signs of it being lifted anytime soon, the burden increased, making life difficult for Nazeeruddin and his family.

Upset with the situation and unable to make the ends meet, he decided to end his life. However, he thought that the world should know about how people like him suffered and decided to set himself ablaze at the Chief Minister’s residence.

He walked close the barricades and emptied the can he was carrying with him and tried to immolate himself but the security personnel rushed and rescued him. After this, he appealed to the government to help the families of many vendors which were suffering due to the lockdown.

After the incident, security has been beefed up at the Chief Minister’s residence.
