Man arrested for fleecing desperate COVID patients, illegally selling oxygen cylinders at high rates

Hyderabad: The sleuths of the commissioner’s task force, north zone, Hyderabad, busted an illegal oxygen cylinder racket and arrested one person on 12 July. The police seized 19 oxygen cylinders - 16 cylinders of 50 kg each and three of 14 kg each.

Following a tip-off, the cops raided Baba Traders located at Indira Nagar in Musheerabad and arrested Shaik Akbar (36) for illegally procuring and selling oxygen cylinders and other gas cylinders.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many are suffering from the non-availability of oxygen cylinders in hospitals and the market. Akbar had hatched to cash in on the high demand for oxygen cylinders due to the pandemic. He was selling the cylinders at a high price to desperate COVID patients under home quarantine in the city and needy customers. He had also illegally procured Co2 and LPG cylinders.

Akbar was purchasing oxygen cylinders from Sardar Khan at Baba Gas Agency without any valid license or permission from the Drug Control Authorities and the Controller of Explosives officials. He illegally stored the cylinders at Baba Traders in Indira Nagar.

The police hander over Akbar and the seized cylinders to the SHO of the Musheerabad police station for further investigation.
