Chittoor: After a filmy car chase in the outskirts of Chandragiri town, members of a task force on Sunday arrested a red sanders smuggler and seized 28 logs of the tree.

According to P. Ravi Shankar, SP of the Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force, they received a tip-off that a vehicle was smuggling red sanders logs in the Chandragiri area.

After a few hours, the task force team, led by the police and forest officials, identified a vehicle when it reached SV Nagar, near Tirupati. The driver of the vehicle sped up when he noticed that the police were following him. When the officials tried to intercept the vehicle, the driver tried to escape through the Chandragiri road.

Police chased the car and alerted the local police of Chandragiri town but they also failed to stop the vehicle. The driver, identified as Satish, took the highway and was finally caught at Thondavada village. The task force members found two lethal weapons in the vehicle and seized 28 logs of red sanders which were hidden under coconut coir.

Forest officials said Satish was from Poonamalli in the outskirts of Chennai and had been deputed by some smugglers from Vellore in Tamil Nadu for the job.
