Mother and grandparents sentenced to prison, for beating 18-month-old child

Hyderabad: Parents who punish their children for petty reasons beware. In a first in the state, a drunken woman, accused of assaulting her 18-month daughter in 2016, was found guilty by a court in the city. The court also found the womanās parents guilty, since they didnāt prevent the act even though present at the scene. The woman, Jaya, was sentenced to prison for one year, while the elderly couple Anjaiah and Laxmi were sentenced to three months. The judgement came as a boost to children facing abused at the hands of their drunk parents.
During December 2016, Ranga Reddy district Child Protection officer complained with Kushaiguda police station. The grievance stated that Jaya created nuisance at Radhika X roads and hit her daughter Krishnaveni, causing a severe head injury. Jayaās parents were present at the time and did not attempt to stop the act. She, and her parents were arrested, remanded, and released on bail. Further inquiries revealed that Jaya has a habit of beating her daughter after getting drunk.
A charge sheet was filed against her before the XIX Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Malkajgiri. The court, during the trial, examined the evidence and witnesses in the case and delivered the judgement on Tuesday. While sentencing them to prison, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,150 on Jaya and Rs 250 fine on her parents.
