NRI doctor caught with Rs. 20L unaccounted cash

Hyderabad: An NRI doctor was caught with Rs. 20 lakh unaccounted cash by security personnel at Punjagutta on 18 October. The incident was reported while Telangana police’s counter-terrorism squad Organisation for Counter-Terrorist Operations (OCTOPUS) was conducting a mock drill as a routine exercise. Dr Praveen, the NRI, and the cash were handed over to the Punjagutta police for further inquiry.

According to the police, Dr Praveen, who is from Chittoor, had been working in the US. His parents were also living with him. A few months ago, he came to Hyderabad and had been staying at Punjagutta since then.

During interrogation, he told the police that the money was for construction activities that were being undertaken at Chevella on the outskirts of Hyderabad. However, he could not produce any documents to prove the same.

The police said if the doctor can produce relevant documents, then the cash will be released to him. If not, it would be handed over to the Income Tax Department.
