Odisha Inter student falls to death in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: A 16-year-old first year Intermediate student of a corporate residential college near Boyapalem area under Anandapuram police station limits in Vizag city allegedly fell from the terrace of the hostel building and sustained serious head injuries, in the early hours of Saturday. He succumbed while undergoing treatment, later in the day.

The victim was identified as Yarnakula Karthik, a resident of Parlakhemundi, Odisha. However, there was no clarity on whether it was a suicide or accidental death or if someone had pushed him to his death.

Sources said that Karthik’ father Y Narasinga Rao got a call from the staff of the college at 6.30 am that Karthik had fallen from the terrace and had died in a hospital.

Mr Rao told reporters that the staff did not mention how and why he went to the terrace in the early hours. He wanted to know whether he had committed suicide or someone had pushed him from the terrace. Karthik was wearing only a towel when he fell from the terrace.

Karthik scored high marks in SSC (Class-X) examination in Odisha and his father wanted him to do well in Intermediate and admitted him in Sasi College, located at Boyapalem.

The college has its own hostel. The boy’s father said even his classmates were tight-lipped about the incident, ostensibly under pressure from teachers, warden and management.

Anandapuram police have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC (Suspicious Death) and investigation is on to ascertain the exact reasons behind the death of Karthik.

The parents of the boy alleged that the college management was responsible for the death of their son. The police shifted the dead body to morgue for autopsy.
