Online lottery fraud: Prakasam student loses Rs 46 lakh to cyber crooks

Prakasam, May 1: A 21-year-old student from Prakasam district has lost Rs 46 lakh to unidentified cyber fraudsters after he paid the amount as the processing fee to avail Rs 3.6 crore online lottery money.

Hailing from Peerapuram village, K Suresh (name changed) had received a message through WhatsApp from Global Company saying that they had organized a lucky draw and he had won the online lottery worth Rs3.6 crore.

Elated, Suresh called the mobile number to claim the cash prize. Suresh was asked to pay taxes, processing fees, and other miscellaneous charges to claim the cash prize.

Later Suresh deposited Rs 46 lakh to 10 different bank accounts from State Bank of India, Kondapi. Suresh had borrowed huge amounts from his relatives to avail cash prize.

Suspecting fishy dealings, the bank officials questioned Suresh about his transactions. However, Suresh said he deposited the amount into his relatives’ accounts.

When the fraudster asked for an additional Rs 5 lakh as service tax, Suresh got suspicious and approached the police.

Inspector of Singarayakonda Police, U Srinivasulu said that they have registered a case and investigation is on to identify the cyber crooks. The police officer said people should not blindly trust such messages
