Osmania professor arrested for Maoist links granted bail

Hyderabad: After nearly four months in jail, professor Chintakindi Khasim of Osmania University (OU), who was arrested in January over alleged Maoist links, was granted bail on 19 May.

He was lodged at Warangal Central prison after the Siddipet police had arrested him in January. The LB Nagar police had also executed an arrest in connection with his alleged links with former Maoists Narla Ravi Sharma (54) and Bellapu Anuradha (56), who were arrested in November 2019. After his arrest in this case, a warrant was issued in connection with a pending case at the Khanapur police station of Warangal commissionerate.

There were cases against Khasim at three other places in the state, under charges of sedition and alleged links to the banned Maoist outfit. However, bail was granted in all those cases.

The Ranga Reddy district court, on Tuesday, granted him bail and directed him to deposit Rs. 2 lakh and two sureties. The court also asked him to cooperate with the investigating agencies looking into the case.

The district court of Warangal, meanwhile, also granted bail to the professor in connection with the 2012 case and directed him to furnish cash deposit and sureties. He is likely to be released from prison on Wednesday.
