Pak may release fishermen of North Andhra Pradesh

Vizianagaram : Despite the strained relations between India and Pakistan over scrapping of Article 370, the Pakistan government has agreed to release 20 fishermen from North Andhra who have been languishing in a Karachi jail since January 2018.

Vizianagaram MP Bellana Chandrasekhar said, “Prior to their release which will be done in phases, the Pakistan government agreed to allow the fishermen’s family members to meet them.”

The district administration has informed the family members and arrangements are being made for their visit to the border.

He said that Rajya Sabha member and senior functionary of the YSRC V. Vijaysai Reddy influenced the ministry of external affairs for this breakthrough. They will be allowed to meet their family members very soon.

In January last year, five fishermen from Bhogapuram in Pusapatirega mandal and 15 fishermen from Matyalesa village in Srikakulam district who were working in a mechanised fishing boat in Virawal, Gujarat strayed into Pakistan waters while fishing. They were arrested by the Pakistan Coast Guard and have been in a jail in Karachi since then.
