Peaceful I-Day celebrations in Kashmir Valley

The first Independence Day celebrations after the Centre scrapped Article 370 for Jammu and Kashmir went on peacefully.

The main Independence Day function which was presided over by Governor Satyapal Malik was held in the Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium in Srinagar amidst tight security. All roads leading to the function venue were sealed off. Kashmir’s mainstream political leaders were not present for the function as most of them have been arrested after the removal of Article 370.

According to police sources, Pakistani militant outfits have been active in the state, and there are inputs of possible militant strikes, as result security forces are extra alert.

Independence Day celebrations were also held in all the district headquarters and security forces were deployed in large numbers in the market place. Forces can also be seen manning the highways. After the scrapping of Article 370, massive restrictions have been imposed in Kashmir on the movement of people and traffic including a communication block. However, no fatal casualty has been reported.
