Delhi: Eminent Supreme Court lawyer and former Union minister Ram Jethmalani passed away on Sunday. The veteran lawyer breathed his last at his Delhi residence after suffering from a prolonged illness.

His last rites will be performed on Sunday evening at the Lodhi road crematorium.

Taking to Twitter, several senior leaders paid tributes to the noted veteran lawyer.

Jethmalani had served as Union law minister and chairman of the Bar Council of India. He represented many high-profile and controversial cases.

Jethmalani is survived by a son and daughter. His son Mahesh Jethmalani is also a noted lawyer.

While paying tributes to Jethamalani Union home minister Amit Shah said, “Deeply pained to know about the passing away of India’s veteran lawyer and former Union minister Ram Jethmalani ji. In him we have not only lost a distinguished lawyer but also a great human who was full of life (sic).”

President Ram Nath Kovind said, “Saddened by the passing of Ram Jethmalani, former Union Minister and a veteran lawyer. He was known to express his views on public issues with his characteristic eloquence. The nation has lost a distinguished jurist, a person of great erudition and intellect.”

Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “Deeply condole the passing away of the veteran lawyer and former Law Minister Ram Jethmalani. My profound condolences.”

BJP's working president J.P. Nadda tweeted, “Saddened to hear the news of passing away of eminent lawyer & former union law minister Shri Ram Jethmalani. He was a legend of bar and inspiration for many lawyers. His vast experience and knowledge will be missed".

Union minister Prakash Javadekar said, “Sorry to hear about the passing away of an outstanding criminal lawyer and an outspoken politician Ram Jethmalani ji. Condolences to his family members and followers. Om Shanti.”
