Hyderabad: Telangana’s flagship Mahalakshmi free bus travel scheme for women has enabled cumulative savings of ₹10,000 crore in transportation costs.

This marks a major milestone in women’s economic empowerment in the state

Introduced on December 9, 2023, the initiative has significantly improved mobility, access to opportunities, and financial independence for women across the state.

Massive uptake in free travel

Since its launch, women passengers have utilized over 290 crore zero-fare tickets in about 28 months, according to TGSRTC Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy.

The scheme has witnessed widespread adoption, reflecting its impact on daily commuting needs. On average, more than 35 lakh women are travelling free of cost every day, safely reaching their destinations.

Significant savings for households

Before the scheme, women from lower- and middle-income households typically spent between ₹1,500 and ₹2,500 per month on transport. With free travel now available, these expenses have turned into savings, collectively reaching ₹10,000 crore. Officials said this marks a crucial step toward improving women’s financial stability and independence.

Sharp rise in women ridership

The introduction of the Mahalakshmi scheme has led to a notable increase in women passengers using RTC services. Their share has risen from around 40% earlier to over 67% now. This surge highlights the scheme’s success in making public transport more accessible and inclusive.

Government support strengthens RTC

The Telangana government reimburses TGSRTC for the cost of free tickets issued under the scheme. This financial support has helped the corporation maintain operational stability, pay employee salaries, and meet maintenance and service requirements, ensuring uninterrupted services despite increased ridership.

Improved access to jobs, education, healthcare

Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the scheme has opened up new opportunities for women. Many are now travelling from rural areas to towns and cities for employment, pursuing higher education, accessing better healthcare in Hyderabad, and visiting religious places with ease. He noted that the initiative is playing a key role in strengthening women’s participation in economic activities.

'A victory for women, not just free travel’

Describing the ₹10,000 crore savings as a historic achievement, the Minister said the scheme represents more than just free transportation; it is a symbol of empowerment and progress for women in Telangana. He also congratulated women passengers and TGSRTC staff for achieving 290 crore journeys in a short span.

Smart cards to be introduced

To make the scheme more efficient, TGSRTC plans to introduce chip-based smart cards for women passengers. This system will eliminate the need to show Aadhaar cards and ensure accurate data tracking. Officials also said that additional buses are being deployed to handle the growing demand.

Wide coverage across services

The scheme is currently applicable to about 81% of TGSRTC bus services, including Pallevelugu, District Express, City Ordinary, and Metro Express buses. This extensive coverage has ensured that women across both rural and urban areas benefit from the initiative.

Driving inclusive growth

TGSRTC officials stated that the Mahalakshmi scheme is not merely a welfare measure but a transformative policy that promotes inclusive growth. By easing travel and enabling savings, it is helping women play a more active role in the state’s social and economic development.
