Khammam RTC driver upset over governments stand, immolates himself

Hyderabad: RTC driver, Srinivas Reddy upset over the government’s stand on the on-going TS RTC strike, self-immolated himself on Saturday. The resident of Khammam district took this drastic step after he was informed of the government’s decision. Srinivas Reddy sustained severe burns and he categorised to be ‘critical’.

Serving as a driver at the Khammam depot, Srinivas was an active member observing the strike since the first day.

On Saturday, while he was at home watching television, he learnt that the government wasn’t in a state to listen to the employee's demands. He then picked up a can containing kerosene and set himself on fire, in the presence of his wife and son. The son sustained burns while he tried to rescue his father. Doctor’s observation revealed that Srinivas Reddy sustained 60 percent burns, his son escaped with minor burns. Srinivas Reddy was rushed to the hospital and his condition is being said to be critical.

As the news of the incident broke, scores of employees from across the district rushed to the hospital to extend support. A few employees at the Khammam depot and bus station went on a rampage and damaged a few buses. However, no passengers were injured in the incidents

It may be recalled that two TSRTC employees died of alleged cardiac arrest at Sangareddy and Uppal on Thursday, due to worrying over their jobs. At Alwal a woman employee's husband also died out of worry for his wife's job.

Meanwhile, the strike by over 50,000 employees ended the eighth day on Saturday. Keeping in view of the strike, the state government has decided to extend Dasara holidays till October 19.
