SC directs Delhi CM to stop freebies

New Delhi: The country’s apex court on Friday warned the Delhi government to stop offering freebies. The Supreme Court has expressed concern that freebies and populist schemes will adversely affect the system, The apex court heard a case filed against Aravind Kejriwal-led AAP government for announcing free travel for women in Delhi metro.

The petitioner has asked the AAP government to stop giving freebies spending public money. It went to an extent that it would stop them, as it is not ‘powerless’

“If you allow people to travel for free, then the Delhi metro may go into loss. If you will give freebies, we will stop you. You are fighting for a cause here and you want them to incur a loss. Don’t give sops, it is public money,” a Supreme Court Bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Deepak Gupta told the lawyer appearing for the Delhi government.

Further, the justice said: “Don’t think that the courts are powerless.”

The remarks of the apex court will have an impact on other states also as several chief ministers are generously using public money for the sake of votes.
