Sonia Gandhi appointed Congress interim President

New Delhi :Congress Working Committee ( CWC) on Saturday evening unanimously resolved to appoint Sonia Gandhi as the new interim president of the Indian National Congress party. This comes after a day long consultations that took place on Saturday and after more than 70 days of leadership drama.



The appointment was confirmed by Senior Congress Gulam Nabi Azad to the media. Ms. Gandhi was earlier the INC president between 1998 to 2017.

The CWC in the resolution said, " it considered the views of Pradesh Congress Committee president, Congress Legislature leaders, AICC secretaries and members of Parliament. The CWC resolved that Rahul Gandhi should continue as Congress President as requested him to accept CWC's decision however Mr. Gandhi declined to withdraw his resignation consequently the CWC decides to resolved to request Sonia Gandhi to take over as Interim President , pending the election of the regular president by the AICC, said a statement issued by the IN

Earlier in the day, both parliamentarians Rahul Gandhi and Ms. Gandhi expressed their will not to be part of the CWC discussion and walked out of the committee meeting . However towards the end it was concluded that Sonia Gandhi will lead the party as interim chief .
