Sudanese woman caught with smuggled gold at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

Hyderabad: A Sudanese woman was caught smuggling Gold at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday morning.

The Sudanese woman had concealed gold bars and ornaments in her under garments and shoes. Smuggled gold worth Rs 11 lakh was seized from her possession.

According to customs officials, the woman in her late 30s landed at the RGI airport, Hyderabad from Dubai by a Fly Dubai flight FZ 435 in the early hours of Wednesday.

Acting on specific inputs about gold smuggling, officials from the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs wing intercepted her. Initially she denied carrying any dutiable goods. But on thorough examination, she admitted to smuggling gold.

Further, two gold bars of 999 purity weighing 233.2 grams and other gold ornaments of 22 carat weighing 54.3 grams were recovered from her possession. She had concealed them in her under garments and shoes. The woman was detained and her passport seized.

Inquiries are underway to verify if she was a part of any international gold smuggling network.
