Surgeon at Gandhi Hospital tests positive for COVID-19

Hyderabad: A surgeon working at the Gandhi Hospital tested positive for Coronavirus. The doctor, a resident of Malkajgiri, is currently staying at Gandhi Hospital, along with his relative, to pursue higher studies.

Following this development, officials have taken up sanitisation activities near his residence and also at the hostel premises. A few of his colleagues who were in contact with him in the last few days were advised to be quarantined.

According to sources, the doctor has been living in an apartment at Mirjalguda in Malkajgiri area.

During the last week, the virus spread rapidly among the medical professionals, especially those working at the government hospitals in Hyderabad. More than 50 of them tested positive within a couple of days. Doctors and PG students from Osmania Medical College, staff of the hospital, including the sanitation and security, tested positive during the last week.

A few doctors, who are not working in the Covid-19 wings, also tested positive. In Gandhi Hospital too, at least four doctors, including a professor in the pathology department and some senior doctors, tested positive.

The NIMS Hospital in the city also witnessed a spike in the number of positive cases among its staff for Covid-19. As many as 9 specialist doctors working in the cardiology wing at the hospital tested positive, forcing suspension of the outpatient services at the cardiology wing in NIMS Hospital.

As there is a steady rise of cases among doctors and support staff, the demand for more safety equipment for them is increasing. They have also represented about the issue to health minister Etala Rajender and he assured them of all support during the pandemic.
