Techie fakes dads heart surgery, dupes colleagues for Rs 11 lakh

Hyderabad: In a peculiar case of cheating, a techie faked to his colleagues that his father has to undergo heart surgery and collected money from his colleagues. Using the same reason, the accused Varun Vasanthan collected more than Rs 11 lakh from 12 colleagues during the past six months. Raidurgam police of Cyberabad commissionerate in the city arrested the techie Varun Vasantan on Saturday.

According to police, Varun Vasantan’s family hailing from Tamil Nadu, are settled at Alwal. Varun is working for a software firm at Knowledge city at Raidurgam. A few months ago, he informed his colleague SM Venkatesh that his father has to undergo heart surgery and borrowed Rs One lakh from him, promising to return in a month. After a month when Venkatesh asked to return the money, Varun gave some excuse and delayed the payment. He continued delaying for more than four months. Later, he quit the job from the company and even switched off the mobile phone.

Realising that he was cheated, Venkatesh complained with police. Based on the call data records and other technical evidence, police traced Varun and arrested him.

Inquiries revealed that using the same reason, Varun has collected amount from eleven more colleagues at the office and did not repay any of them. Varun had cheated them to a tune of around Rs 11 lakh found police.
