Thief sets himself ablaze at Chandrayanagutta PS, 2 police personnel also suffer burns

Hyderabad: A man attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze at Chandrayanagutta police station in the city on Monday night. He was however rescued by the police present at the spot.

The man was identified as Mohd Ibrahim and he suffered serious burns. Two police personnel who rescued him also suffered burn injuries.

Shabbir was brought to the police station in the evening in connection with stealing a mobile phone after he was caught red-handed by people near a petrol pump.

As he was in an inebriated condition, police registered a case against him and sent him home. Later in the night, he returned to the police station doused in petrol and set himself ablaze.

Additional Inspector K. N. Prasad Varma and constable Sai Kiran, who were at the spot, noticed this and rushed to his rescue. By then, fire spread all over his body and he ran out of the police station shouting for help.

The police personnel also ran behind him and doused the flames. He was then shifted to Osmania hospital, where he is undergoing treatment now.

Inspector of Chandrayanagutta PS Rudra Bhaskar said there were eight theft cases against Shabbir in the past and in four cases, he was even convicted too. There is an active suspect sheet against him in the police station.

When he was brought to the police station, a mobile phone was recovered from his possession, but it did not belong to the complainant in this particular case. “We are verifying the details of the mobile phone,” the Inspector said.
