Hyderabad: A 15-month-old girl was injured in an explosion that took place in Hyderabad on Saturday. A plastic container at a house in Habsiguda exploded, triggering panic among the residents.

Police said that there was nothing to worry about as no explosives were involved in the incident. “It was a result of a chemical reaction.” The incident occurred in the VST colony under the limits of the Nacharam police station.

The girl, K. Chaitra was playing in the backyard of her home on Saturday morning, when she accidentally stepped on a plastic container, and it immediately exploded with a loud noise. Her father, Srisailam rushed to her rescue and kicked the container. He was unhurt. Due to the sound, crowds gathered outside the house. The injured girl hurt her left toe in the incident.

Police teams from Nacharam police station along with clues teams, bomb teams and other wings of the Rachakonda commissionerate rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. The clues teams seized the plastic container which could hold around a litre of liquid. They took samples of the chemical from the explosion site.

Nacharam inspector K. Mahesh told media persons that the container contained an unknown chemical. Since, the chemical was not stored properly and was in the container for a very long time, it had turned solid, resulting in the explosion when the girl stepped on it.

Police are probing how the container made its way into the home.

He added that the chemical exploded due to high pressure. There was no fire involved in the incident. “There is nothing to panic. It is just a chemical explosion, and we have sent samples to the forensic science laboratories for detailed examination. A case is registered, and we will further investigate the incident.”

Meanwhile, the girl was rushed to a private hospital and is out of danger, according to hospital authorities.
