KCR renames Warangal Urban Hanamkonda; Warangal Rural becomes Warangal

Warangal: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday announced that Warangal Urban district would be renamed Hanamkonda while Warangal Rural district will now be called Warangal. Orders for the same will be released by the government soon.

The Chief Minister was in Warangal to lay the foundation stone for the multi-super specialty hospital proposed to be constructed on the old Central prison premises in the district. He also inaugurated the administrative block of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences and the Integrated District Collectorate Complex in the city.

"Warangal should become an industrial hub. We are turning Warangal Urban District into Hanmakonda. Warangal Rural will be Warangal district," KCR said, adding that the name was given during the British period. He also directed chief secretary Somesh Kumar to issue orders after finalizing the district boundaries within the next few days.

The Chief Minister instructed the officials to use the newly-inaugurated Integrated Collectorate Complex of Warangal Urban district for the new district of Hanamkonda and construct a new complex for Warangal Urban district in the Autonagar area. Warangal (formerly Warangal Rural) Collectorate will be constructed soon, the CM said and added that a veterinary college was sanctioned for Warangal districts on Sunday.

The Warangal Rural district is yet to have its own headquarters. Hanamkonda is serving as the joint headquarters for both the districts. Hoping that Warangal would become a center of education, medicine, and industry, KCR said that maternity centers should be set up in every old taluka and a hospital along with a dental college would be sanctioned for Warangal.

KCR arrived in a helicopter from Hyderabad and landed at the Arts and Science College in Hanamkonda on Monday. He paid tributes to Telangana ideologue Prof. K. Jayashankar and performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the multi-super specialty hospital. The hospital will have 24 floors, including a helipad for an air ambulance.

Speculations were rife that the Telangana government may carve out a new district by including several mandals from Warangal Urban, Karimnagar, Siddipet, and Jayashankar Bhupalpally districts. The state is mulling the formation of a new district following the centenary birth celebrations of P.V Narasimha Rao last year. This move could also fulfill the long-standing demand to upgrade Vangara and Challuru villagers to mandals. This implies that the formation of a new district would change the current state of the surrounding districts.
