TSRTC driver succumbs to burns, after fighting for more than 12 hours

Hyderabad: Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) driver from Khammam depot, Srinivas Reddy who had allegedly immolated himself at his residence on Saturday, died due to his burn injuries after battling for more than 12 hours at a city hospital on Sunday.

Though there has been no official announcement from the hospital so far, a team of forensic experts from the Osmania Hospital lead by the head of department forensics rushed to Apollo hospital, where this TSRTC martyr was undergoing treated. Police have reportedly requested the experts to conduct the post mortem at the hospital mortuary.

It was reported that while Srinivas was burning, he shouted slogans in support of the TSRTC employees. His last words were, “All employees should get their jobs back and should be happy.” In the suicide note he left, Srinivas said that the government is responsible for his suicide. “The TSRTC should be merged with the government and the provident fund and CCS amounts of the employees should be credited immediately,” his suicide note said.

As soon as news of Srinivas Reddy’s death broke, hundreds of employees from across the city rushed to the hospital. Leaders from several political parties, people's organisations also rushed to the hospital. The hospital premises continued to echo with slogans demanding justice to the employees.

Expecting an outrage from employees, Hyderabad city police have deployed additional forces including armed and special teams at the hospital, to control the situation. The moment the news of Srinivas Reddy's death came out, the employees that had gathered in large numbers went out of control. However, the police managed to stop them from entering the hospital area and detained them. The approach roads to the hospital were barricaded for at least a kilometer and the huge police force was deployed.

Post mortem to be conducted at Apollo hospital:

Initially, arrangements were made to shift the body to the Osmania Hospital mortuary for post mortem. But, given the seriousness of the situation and the crowds gathered at the hospital, police advised the hospital authorities against moving the body out. Further, they have made arrangements at Apollo hospital to carry out the post mortem. As Apollo hospital is about 7 km from the Osmania mortuary, there could be a law and order issue while shifting the body, due to which police have decided against it.

Meanwhile, a video of Malkajgiri MP A. Revanth Reddy speaking to doctors at Apollo hospital about Srinivas Reddy's health condition has gone viral on social media. In the video, a doctor is heard saying that they are making arrangements for the PME at the Apollo hospital mortuary and that the information has been communicated to the forensic department of the Osmania hospital.
