Two killed after Maoists trigger landmine blast in Vizag Agency

Visakhapatnam: Suspected Maoists detonated a powerful landmine leaving two people dead at Kondrum in Chintalaveedhi forest area under Pedabayalu police station limits in Vizag Agency on Monday evening.

The deceased have been identified as M Mohan Kumar, 26 and M Ajay Kumar 20 of Chintalaveedhi village.

The incident took place on the final day of 'Martyrs Week’ being observed by Maoists. The explosion occurred when Rao and Kumar were returning home after grazing their cattle in the forest area.

The CPI (Maoist) rebels are reported to have planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the routes approaching their hideouts on Andhra-Odisha border.

Superintendent of Police, Visakhapatnam, B Krishna Rao said the landmine or landmines were planted by Maoists rebels to target the security forces. He said more than one landmine might have exploded.

Police said since combing operation and surveillance have been intensified, the rebels are trying hard to target security forces with landmines.

A few days ago, the exchange of fire between the Maoists and security forces left one rebel dead on Andhra Odisha Border (AOB). The exchange of fire took place in the forest area under Annavaram police station limits in Vizag Agency.

The slain Maoist was identified as Pangi Daya, a member of banned Pedabayulu Dalam. He was a native of Vakapalle village under G Madugula Mandal in Vizag Agency.
