Vizag police to install 150-decibel acoustic device to warn people in red zones

Visakhapatnam: The Vizag city police, in a bid to disperse people and send warnings in red zone areas, will install a long-range acoustic device (LRAD) with the help of the Navy. The LRAD will be set up on a rooftop in the city's Allipuram area, a red zone where two positive cases have been reported.

The 150-decibel public address system will be effective to make announcements and can also automatically translate them into several languages. LRAD is a non-lethal system but, if required, can injure targeted personnel with its ear-splitting, very high decibel tones and noise beams.

In some cases, people standing close to the system, too, can suffer a permanent hearing disability. The Navy acquired LRAD from a US firm which holds its patent. The equipment will be installed in Vizag on 27 April.

"The high-decibel announcements and warnings can reach a distance of two kilometers and will help send a strong message to people who violate the lockdown orders,’’ said a senior police officer.

If the experiment is successful in Vizag, the police may use LRAD in other cities in Andhra Pradesh where more COVID-19 cases have been reported.
