Vizag Rural police destroy over Rs 13 crore ganja

Visakhapatnam : After years of wait, Vizag Rural police got a legal nod to destroy tonnes of seized dry cannabis in Vizag region. The police on Friday destroyed around 63,870 kgs (63.87 tonnes) of dry ganja, worth over Rs 13 crore in the presence of drug disposal committee at the dumping ground in Vizag city.

This is the third time that such a huge quantity of dry ganja was destroyed in a single day. DIG (Visakha Range) L.K.V. Ranga Rao and superintendent of police (Visakha Rural) Babujee Attada said that the ganja destroyed on Friday was the seized stock that had accumulated over the past 10 years in over 455 cases under police stations limits under Paderu, Anakapalle and Narsipatnam sub-divisional police limits in the district.

Disposal committee chairman and DIG Ranga Rao said that Vizag rural police and the officials of the prohibition and excise department seized over 1.2 kgs of dry ganja in several cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the past one decade and plan to destroy the seized cannabis in a phased manner after obtaining court permission.

The Apex court has given guidelines destroying seized cannabis. The court says that the seized cannabis has to be destroyed in a scientific manner from time to time, to avoid it being misused. The police said, “We are chalking out plans to auction the vehicles that were seized in ganaj smuggling in the coming days.”
