Hyderabad: VKF(Virat Kohli Foundation) athlete, Sumit Nagal lost (6-4, 1-6, 2-6, 4-6) to Roger Federer in the first round of the US Open on Tuesday.

Sumit said he was happy to face the God of tennis as the 22-year-old faced off against 20-time Grand slam winner Roger Federer.

He showed his nerves of steel as he won the first set 6-4 against Federer. This came as a huge surprise as the 22-year old Sumit was clearly the underdog.

Although, Federer bounced back hard and won the next three sets (1-6, 2-6, 4-6) to win the game and qualify for the next round of the US Open.

Earlier, Sumit made history when he qualified for his first Grand slam singles main draw event at the US Open by winning the finals of the Qualifiers (5-7, 6-4, 6-3) against Joao Menezes from Brazil.

With this, he was qualified to play the first round of the US Open against one of the greatest players to have ever stepped on the court, Roger Federer.

Sumit is only the fifth Indian in this decade to qualify for a Grand Slam Singles main event.
