Vizianagaram: Wild elephants trampled a 50-year-old female farmer to death in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday evening, said the police.

The pachyderms attacked K Chinnammi of Basangi village under Jiyyammavalasa Mandal when she was on her way home from her farm. Locals alerted the police and forest officials after they spotted her body.

So far this year, four people have been killed by wild elephants in Vizianagaram district.

In March, 70-year-old K Kasanna Dora died after it was attacked by a herd at Pedakuduma village under Chinamerangi police station limits. In January, a 62-year-old farmer, N Fakeeru, was killed by wild elephants at Kemisila area under Komarada Mandal.

Local sources said a herd of elephants has entered the tribal pockets in Parvathipuram Agency from a forest in neighbouring Odisha and has been creating havoc by damaging standing crops and huts for the past few months.

Locals said they have been requesting forest officials to save lives and crops from the wild animals by shifting the elephants to the forest in Odisha.
