Worker killed, five injured in chemical factory blast at Kukatpally

Hyderabad: A worker was killed and five others injured when a massive explosion ripped through a chemical factory at Kukatpally on Wednesday.

The accidental blast occurred at IDL Explosives Limited when workers were busy carrying out filling and pressing process of the chemicals. Suddenly a detonator went off accidentally, killing a worker and injuring five others.

The slain was identified as 62-year-old Eleshwara Vasudeva Sharma, who was working as a presser at the plant. The injured were identified as Gorinkala Padma Rao, filler, Raju, working in the unloading section, Harikanth and Naveen Kumar.

IDL Explosives was earlier owned by Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd. On Wednesday, around fifteen workers were working on a detonator machine unit in block no 46C when the blast occurred.

Panic gripped the plant after the blast with workers running helter-skeltor for the safety. Soon police and fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Kukatpally police said inadequate precautionary measures led to the incident. Accordingly, they registered a case of death due to negligence against the management. They have also sealed the blast site for further investigation.
