Youth takes selfie while casting vote, arrested

Warangal: The Jangaon town police, on Wednesday, booked a youth after he was found taking a selfie in his mobile phone while casting his vote during the municipal elections.

The accused Sampath Kumar of Jangaon arrived at the polling booth in the 19th ward. After completing the process of getting his finger inked and collecting the ballot paper, he walked to the ballot box to cast his vote. However, to the shock of the polling officials inside the booth, Sampath pulled out his mobile phone and clicked a selfie. The officials immediately recovered the mobile phone from him and informed the police. He was arrested under Representation of People's Act for violating the secrecy of voting.

The usage of mobile phones within 100 metres of a polling booth is prohibited. The election authorities have asked voters not to carry mobile phones inside the polling centres. The Telangana State Election Commission (TSEC) had already instructed the voters not to carry mobile phones inside the polling booths. Taking selfies inside the polling booths is also against the State Election Commission norms.

Jangaon Inspector D Mallesh said that Sampath Kumar has been arrested and a case against him under section 188 IPC (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) has been registered.
