1 dead, 6 injured as speeding car rams vehicles at traffic junction at Choutuppal

Hyderabad: A speeding car rammed vehicles at a traffic junction at Choutuppal killing one person and injuring at least six others. Due to the collision, one Activa caught fire and was gutted completely while five other vehicles were damaged. The driver of the speeding car did not wait for the vehicles at the junction to move ahead after the light turned green and rammed them causing the damage, the police said. The vehicle driver tested negative for drunk driving.

According to police officials, at 10.39 am on Monday, the traffic signal at the main junction in Choutuppal town, located on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway, turned red, following which the vehicles going towards Vijayawada stopped at the signal.

When the signal turned green the vehicles started moving forward but a speeding car did not slow down as it approached the signal and rammed an Activa. Two persons on the Activa, including a woman riding pillion, fell down. The rider, Nagarjuna, received severe injuries and died on the spot, while the vehicle caught fire immediately due to fuel leakage. The pillion rider escaped with injuries.

The car did not slow down and went ahead at the same speed damaging a few bikes and a car in the process. At least five others in those vehicles sustained injuries.

The Choutuppal police registered a case and started an investigation. They said overspeeding and rash driving by the car driver led to the accident. He has been detained for further investigation.
