By Anurag Mallick Published on 13 Nov 2019 8:47 AM GMTHyderabad: Hyderabad has a long history of producing global icons in several sports disciplines but the latest in the league is a unique one-of-its kind achievement.
Sasikanth PVR has achieved a Hyderabadi first by qualifying for the coveted RAAM (Race Across America) after having accomplished the Deccan Cliffhanger-2019 in 30 hours, the minimum qualifying norm for rugged annual endurance cycling race that commences at West Coast and traverses through to the culmination at the American East Coast. There is clincher-it has to be completed within 12 days!
Sasikanth, the first Hyderabadi to participate, finished fifth in the endurance race organized by Inspire India. He joins three other Indians out to make it to the ultimate destination.
Deccan Cliffhanger is a 646km race from Pune to Goa which goes through many undulating hills that tests the rider's physical and mental abilities. It is only the performances here that make or break a cyclist’s RAAM dreams. The route starts from Bavdhan and heads on to Satara and Yelur post passing through Tawandi Ghats. After Dandeli forest, Belgaum, Karwar it culminates at Bogmalo beach. Helping the rider in his quest for global glory will be a crew, whose efficiency levels are critical for the RAAM hopeful.
Team Sasi compromised Krishna Kunam, Dr Vignan, HS Ahamad, Hemanth Chandan, Rajeev Kalva. All of them have the nitty-gritty of endurance cycling and the demands on the rider besides being well prepared to attend to the rider’s diet and health needs.
Buoyed by the latest accomplishment, Sasikanth is eyeing the global jackpot.
