`Abusive’ husband attempts suicide after wife ends life at Vanasthalipuram

Hyderabad: A marketing executive tried to end his life after his wife committed suicide at Vanasthalipuram of Hyderabad on Wednesday morning.

Identified as Samala Raghavender, he tried to hang himself from the ceiling at his home. However, his neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued him. He has been admitted to the hospital. Earlier his wife M Gnaneshwari committed suicide after she was allegedly harassed by her husband and in-laws for dowry.

M Gnaneshwari and Raghavender got married in June 2018. Her parents had given her gold and silver ornaments as dowry. For the first four months, the couple lived happily. Later her husband Raghavender, mother-in-law Venkatamma, father-in-law Venkaiah and sisters-in-law Kavitha, Radha and her husband Niranjan allegedly started harassing her for additional dowry.

Later local elders intervened and it was decided that both M Gnaneshwari and Raghavender will file for divorce.

Gnaneshwari family, however, wanted her husband and inlaws to change their attitude in order to avoid divorce. instead, they started abusing her physically and mentally for want of additional dowry. Later she killed herself by hanging from the ceiling

Soon after, Raghavender also attempted suicide by hanging. Police have registered a case of death due to dowry harassment against Raghavender and his family members.

Gnaneshwari had completed engineering before marriage. Raghavender is working as a marketing executive for a private firm in the city.
