Dr Rao played a key role in making Nizam Orthopedic Hospital a niche institute. On the call of late Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, he implemented a new structure to the Nizam Orthopedic Hospital and converted it into a premier medical institution in the country. It was later rechristened Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences.
The Government of India honored Rao with the Padma Shri on January 26 2000 in recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of medicine.
