Former NIMS director Dr. Subba Rao passes away, medical fraternity in shock

Hyderabad: Noted radiologist and former director of Nizam Institute of Medical Science (NIMS) Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao passed away on Friday morning at KIMS Hospital. He was admitted a month back due to age-related issues.

A bone radiologist, he was the Chairman at Padmawati Women Medical College.

Dr Rao was the founder president of the Telugu Association of North America (TANA), an umbrella organization for Telugu speaking people in the United States.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has expressed condolences over the death of Padma Shri Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao. The CM recalled the services rendered by Dr. Subba Rao in the field of medicine. He said that Dr Subba Rao's contribution to NIMS as Director is worth mentioning. The CM conveyed his condolences to members of the bereaved family.

Dr Rao played a key role in making Nizam Orthopedic Hospital a niche institute. On the call of late Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, he implemented a new structure to the Nizam Orthopedic Hospital and converted it into a premier medical institution in the country. It was later rechristened Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences.

The Government of India honored Rao with the Padma Shri on January 26 2000 in recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of medicine.
