Lucky escape for 45 tourists as bus catches fire post-collision with a truck at Srikakulam

Srikakulam: Around 45 passengers of a tourist bus from Maharashtra had a providential escape after it caught fire after a collision with another bus and a molasses-laden truck. The event happened on Sunday morning, January 5, at NH-16 near Nelivada Junction under Ranastalam Mandal of Srikakulam district.

About ten passengers of the tourist bus suffered minor burn injuries while the fire charred the bus. According to police, the coach, carrying 45 passengers, was heading towards Visakhapatnam as part of a pilgrimage.

During the trip, the driver lost control of the bus and hit an RTC bus, which was travelling in the same direction, and later the tourist bus collided with the truck. The strong impact damaged the tourist bus’ diesel tank, and it caught fire. The bus’ driver and assistant strived hard to get their passengers to safety. However, 10 of them suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Fire and Emergency Service personnel had arrived at the spot and brought the fire under control. Nonetheless, it did lead to a two-hour-long traffic snarl on the NH. Srikakulam police have registered a case and shifted the injured to a government hospital.
