Assaulted by sarpanch, man ends life in Jangaon

Hyderabad: Upset over being assaulted by the village sarpanch, a 28-year-old man from Telangana's Jangaon district died by suicide on 7 September.

The sarpanch, D. Ramesh, had slapped G. Yellesh, a resident of Kusumbai tanda under Raghunathpally mandal in the district, with his footwear after the latter questioned him about installing street lights in the colony.

According to sources, Ramesh was supervising the installation of street lights in the village on Monday when Yellesh asked him why no street lights were installed in their lane. He asked the sarpanch to install one street light near his home. This led to an argument and an infuriated Ramesh took his footwear and slapped Yellesh with it.

Yellesh returned home, told his wife of the incident, and broke down. Later, he locked himself in a room and consumed pesticide. However, his family came to know of it and rushed him to the district hospital in Jangaon. He was undergoing treatment there but died later on Monday.

Yellesh’s family and relatives staged a protest in front of the police station, demanding strict action against the sarpanch. They ended their protest after the police assured them that justice would be served.
