Auto driver turns out to be super spreader, infects 18 at Asif Nagar

Hyderabad: A 60-year-old auto-rickshaw driver of Asif Nagar has turned out to be the coronavirus spreader after he infected 18 people in his locality. Ever since the lockdown was announced, the auto driver has been home and holds no domestic or International travel history.

It all began with chest pain. In the first week of May 2020, the man with pre-existing health complications, complained of discomfort in his chest. The family earlier ignored his complains assuming the pressure in the chest could be because of his obesity. However, on him turning serious, they rushed him to a government hospital at Nampally. He was later shifted to Osmania General Hospital (OGH).

As a part of the precautionary measures, the doctors at OGH conducted the COVID test. To his family’s surprise, the man tested positive and was moved to Gandhi Hospital. The entire family and neighbors have been put under quarantine. Later, the auto driver's wife , 3 children and 4 adults turned COVID positive.

While it dint stop there, On May 14, the medical results revealed that a family of 10, who reside two houses away from the man’s residence, have been tested positive for COVID. “ My entire family has been infected with Coronavirus. My young brother is friends with the auto driver’s son and we live in the same lane. And they have been interacting daily”, Ahmed (name changed) a COVID patient told NewsMeter. Among the 10 infected from a single family, are three children aged 7, 9 and 11 and two senior citizens aged 60 years. The family has been shifted to Gandhi Hospital.

Kishan Nagar falling under Asif Nagar has now reported 18 cases. Most of the patients hail from two families. The area has been designated as a containment zone. Entry and exit from the area have been restricted.

Analysis of the recent cases revealed, besides cold, cough accompanied with fever and throat infection, many patients are complaining of discomfort in the chest. It is to remember that 30 year old IT employee from Mehdipatnam, experience no symptoms of COVID barring chest pain.
