According to locals, the temple situated in the Kachua area of the North 24 Parganas district was old and its walls were weak. Since the turnout of the crowd was high, it might have led to the collapse of the walls. Amidst the stampede, worshipers could be seen trying to reach safer ground.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee termed the incident as ‘unfortunate’ and has announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased. A compensation of Rs 1 lakh has also been announced for the critically injured, while people with minor injuries will be given Rs 50,000.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital where and treatment is underway.
