Hyderabad: GMR Airports, a subsidiary of GMR Group, on 22 January announced that its consortium has completed the construction of a new terminal building of Clark International Airport, Philippines, in record time and handed it over to Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA).

A formal handing over ceremony was organized on Friday at Clark Freeport Zone and was attended by the secretary of the department of transportation, Arthur Tugade. This is GMR's second project in the Philippines. Earlier, it had developed Mactan Cebu International Airport, the second-largest airport of the Philippines.

Despite the challenge posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the joint-venture of GMR Group and Megawide Construction Corporation managed to construct the 112,000 sq. mt. passenger terminal building in record 24 months. It is one of the fastest completed projects in the Philippines and the first project of the Philippines government under the hybrid public-private partnership (PPP) framework.

The construction conglomerate was awarded the EPC contract following international competitive bidding in December 2017. GMR-Megawide outbid six others, including two Chinese consortia, with the lowest bid and signed the agreement with BCDA, which is a government-owned and controlled corporation under the Office of the President of the Philippines, in January 2018. IFC (World Bank) intermediated the transparent and internationally-competitive project selection process.

Commenting on the successful completion of the new terminal, Srinivas Bommidala, the chairman (energy and international airports), GMR, said, "We feel proud to be part of President Duterte's 'Build-Build-Build Program' through the development of Clark airport. We are very keen to further contribute to the growth of the aviation sector of the country through more projects."

He further added, "We are delighted to have been able to complete the new passenger terminal building in a record time of 24 months and hand it over to the BCDA successfully. Adhering to GMR's concept to showcase local culture at the airport, the new terminal will give a rich feel of the Philippine culture. It has been designed and constructed using the latest innovative technologies and as per international standards and environmental best practices."
