Hyderabad Airport receives Level 4 transition accreditation for environmental responsibility

Hyderabad: GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) has achieved a remarkable milestone in environmental responsibility by receiving Level 4 transition accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI).

This prestigious recognition underscores GHIAL's unwavering commitment to carbon management and aligning with global climate goals.

The Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, established by ACI EUROPE in 2009, serves as the gold standard for evaluating an airport's efforts to reduce carbon emissions. GHIAL's attainment of Level 4 Transition marks the highest level within this program, signifying its dedication to environmental sustainability.

A commitment to environmental responsibility:

CEO Pradeep Panicker highlighted the airport's resolute dedication to environmental stewardship. GHIAL has been at the forefront of initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint, including running on renewable energy sources, pursuing zero waste practices, and zero discharge policies. The airport has set ambitious targets to achieve zero carbon emissions and has invested in sustainable technologies and assets to contribute to a greener world.

Stefano Baronci, Director General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), praised GHIAL for its leadership in efficient carbon management and its resolute commitment to a more sustainable future. He commended the airport for its efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and enhance climate resilience.

A decade-long journey towards sustainability:

GHIAL's journey toward achieving Level 4 Transition began in 2009, following its Silver rating in the 'Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design' (LEED) certification in 2008. The airport has consistently worked on energy conservation measures, including the development of a USGBC-certified LEED passenger terminal building, enhancing green cover, and operating a 10MWp solar power plant.

Among its pioneering initiatives are the use of fixed electric ground power (FEGP) supply to aircraft, a bio-diesel filling station, and the introduction of battery-operated Ground Support Equipment (GSE) vehicles.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals:

GHIAL's commitment to carbon management aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action. The airport has laid out plans to further reduce its carbon emissions through the adoption of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and sustainable aviation fuels.

Recognition and awards:

GHIAL's relentless efforts in sustainability have garnered recognition, including the "National Energy Leader Award" in multiple years, "Excellence-Gold Award," "Excellence Award," and "Special Award" at the Telangana State Energy Conservation Awards. Additionally, the airport received the "Certificate of Merit" from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) for achieving the highest National Energy Conservation Award score.

ACI's role in shaping global airport standards:

The Airports Council International (ACI) plays a pivotal role in setting and advancing airport standards worldwide. Collaborating with governments, regional members, and international organizations like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), ACI strives to promote excellence in the aviation industry and encourage sustainable practices.

GHIAL's Level 4 Transition accreditation is a testament to the airport's commitment to not only meeting but exceeding environmental standards, setting an inspiring example for the aviation industry, and contributing to a more sustainable future.
