Hyderabad to Host Lilly's New Global Manufacturing & Quality Hub in $1B Expansion
Hyderabad: Eli Lilly and Company announced a major strategic investment, committing more than $1 billion over the next several years to establish new contract manufacturing capabilities in India. This substantial investment aims to significantly strengthen Lilly’s global manufacturing and supply chain, expanding patients’ access to innovative medicines worldwide.
The pharmaceutical giant will also establish a new Manufacturing & Quality presence in Hyderabad. This central hub will provide advanced technical capabilities and oversight for Lilly’s network of contract manufacturers across India.
Leveraging India's Talent
Lilly plans to immediately begin recruitment for this new hub, seeking to fill various high-skilled roles including engineers, chemists, analytical scientists, quality control and assurance professionals, and management positions. This initiative underscores Lilly’s intent to leverage India’s highly skilled talent pool to support its global manufacturing growth.
Patrik Jonsson, Executive Vice President and President Lilly International, commented on the decision: “We are making significant investments to increase manufacturing and medicine supply capacity around the world to help ensure patients have access to the medicines they need... Working with trusted contract manufacturers expands our capabilities to deliver life-changing medicines at greater scale — with quality always at the core. This investment reaffirms our confidence in India as a hub for capability building within our global network.”
Endorsed by Telangana Leadership
The expansion was met with praise from state leadership. Chief minister Revanth Reddy hailed the move, stating, “Lilly’s continued expansion in Hyderabad highlights the city’s emergence as a powerhouse in global healthcare innovation, reinforcing the state’s position as a preferred destination for cutting-edge healthcare investments.”
Echoing this sentiment, the Minister for Information Technology, Electronics and Industries and Commerce added that the expansion is “a testament to Telangana’s dynamic industrial landscape and its growing influence in advanced healthcare manufacturing.”
Part of a Global Expansion
This new investment in India is part of a broader, aggressive global expansion by Lilly. Since 2020, the company has committed more than $55 billion to build, expand, and acquire facilities across the U.S. and globally. These investments are specifically targeted to support the expected growth from potential new medicines designed to treat major global health challenges, including diabetes and obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and autoimmune conditions.
Lilly has a longstanding presence in India, with a commercial site in Gurugram and specialized sites in Bengaluru and Hyderabad that already serve as important hubs supporting global innovation. This latest, significant investment reinforces the company’s commitment to the country, focusing on strategic development in local talent and technical capabilities.
