Jharkhand elections: All you need to know about the leaders
By Anurag Mallick Published on 25 Dec 2019 5:10 AM GMTHyderabad: With the BJP losing yet another state and Congress somehow managing to stay in power by forming an alliance with the regional parties, the final numbers of the Jharkhand elections are out.
Of the 81 seats, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has emerged as the top party with 30 seats, followed by the BJP which got 25 seats and the Indian National Congress bagging the third spot at 16. The parties with single-digit scores are Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) with 3, AJSU (2), Independents (2), Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) with 1, NCP (1) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (1).
The polls held in five phases had 1,216 candidates in the fray.
In the first phase, 189 candidates contested for 13 constituencies. Of them, 44, which is 23%, have criminal cases against their names. Twenty-six candidates – 14% – face serious criminal charges. The no of crorepati candidates was 59 (31%), with their average assets being Rs 1.85 crore.
Of the winners of the 13 constituencies, seven MLAs (54%) face criminal cases, including four with serious charges. Of the 13 legislators, 10 are crorepatis. The average assets of all the MLAs in the first phase is Rs 6.75 crore.
In the second phase, 260 candidates fought for 20 seats. While 67 (26%) of these candidates have criminal cases against their names, 44 (17%) face serious criminal charges. There were 46 crorepati candidates in this phase, while the average assets of all candidates in the second phase was Rs .71 crore.
Of the 20 winners in the second phase, 11 have criminal cases, including 9 with serious charges. While half the number of MLAs are crorepatis, the average assets of all the 20 legislators are worth Rs 1.95 crore.
In the third phase, 309 candidates contested for 17 constituencies. Ninety-one (29%) of them face criminal charges, including 62 with serious cases. There were 77 crorepati candidates (25%) in this phase, while the average assets of the candidates in the third phase was is Rs 1.24 crore.
Nine of the 17 winners of the third phase face criminal cases, including 7 with serious charges. Thirteen are crorepatis and the average assets of the Phase-3 winners are Rs 5.53 crore.
The fourth phase saw 221 candidates in the fray for 15 seats. Seventy-five (34%) of them have criminal cases on their names, including 48 with serious charges. There were 60 (27%) crorepati candidates. The average assets of all candidates are Rs 1.25 crore.
Of the 15 winners, 8 face criminal cases of whom five have serious charges against them. Ten MLAs are crorepatis and the average assets of all 15 legislators are Rs 2.11 crore.
In the fifth phase, there were 237 contestants for 16 constituencies. Fifty-eight (24%) of them have criminal cases against their names, while 42 face serious charges. There were 51 (22%), crorepati candidates, while the average asset of all the candidates in the last phase was Rs 1.31 crore.
Of the 16 winners, 9 face serious criminal charges. Thirteen of these MLAs are crorepatis and the average assets of all the MLAs in Phase-5 is worth Rs 3.87 crore.
In the 81-member Assembly, 44 MLAs have criminal cases, including 34 with serious charges. Fifty-six legislators are crorepatis, while the average assets of all the legislators in the House are worth Rs 3.87 crore.
The percentage of MLAs with declared criminal cases in 2014 was 68%. It has come down to 54% in 2019.

Criminal cases against MLAs, party-wise: BJP (12 of 25), JVM(P) - 3 of 3, JMM (17 of 30), AJSU (1 of 2), Congress (8 of 16) and 1 each from NCP, CPI and RJD have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
Serious criminal cases against MLAs: BJP (9 of 25), JVM(P) - 3 of 3, JMM (12 of 30), Congress (8 of 16) and 1 each from CPI and RJD.
Of the 81 MLAs, the percentage of crorepatis was 51 was in 2014. It is 69 in 2019.
MLAs with declares assets worth over Rs 1 crore: BJP (18 of 25), JVM(P) - 2 of 3, JMM (22 of 30), AJSU (2 of 2), Congress (9 of 16), 2 Independents.
The average assets of an MLA in 2014 was Rs 1.84 crore. It is Rs 3.87 crore this time.
The Richie Rich: Rameshwar Oraon from Lohardaga district and Congress has assets over Rs 28 crore
BJP's Kushwaha Shashi Bhushan Mehta from Palamu has assets worth of over Rs 27.6 crore.
Manish Jaiswal from Hazaribagh and BJP has declared assets worth over Rs 27.4 crore.
MLAs with lowest assets
JMM leader Mangal Kalindi from East Singhbhum district - Rs 30,000.
Congress's Amba Prasad from Ramgarh district - Rs 4 lakh.
JMM's Samir Kumar Mohanty from East Singhbhum district - Rs 6 lakh.
30 MLAs have declared their educational qualification to be between 8th and 12th standard, while 49 of them are graduate and above. One of them is just a literate and another one is a diploma holder.
Age: 46 of them have declared their age between 25-50 while 35 have declared their age between 51-80.
Of the 81 MLAs, 10 were women in 2014. The number is now 8.
The number of re-elected MLAs in 2019 is 36.
