The veteran Congress leader will be lodged in Tihar Jail till September 19 in connection with the corruption in INX Media case.
The court allowed him to carry his medicines to the jail and directed that he be kept in a separate cell.
He also filed a surrender application in the case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) which will be taken up for hearing on September 12.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, for CBI, in his arguments said that sending P. Chidambaram to judicial custody was a "necessary consequence." He further added that if Chidambaram released, he would tamper with evidence and influence the witnesses.
Meanwhile, senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, sought his release adding that the reasons given by CBI for Chidambaram's judicial custody were non-existent.
